The Bahamas
Welcome![]()
The Bahamas, officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is an independent, sovereign, English-speaking country consisting of two thousand cays and seven hundred islands that form an archipelago. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean southeast of the United States; north of Cuba, Hispaniola (Dominican Republic & Haiti) and the Caribbean Sea; and northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Its size is almost 14,000 km² with an estimated population of 330,000. Its capital is Nassau. It remains a Commonwealth realm. The Bahamas depends on imported petroleum products to satisfy over 99% of its consumer energy demand. It is realized that renewable energy technologies are a means to sustain vulnerable ecosystem services in the country as a small island developing state as well as to meet national energy needs. Renewable energy sources or technologies represent a negligible contribution to the national energy mix. Two main players, the Bahamas Electricity Corporation (“BEC”) and the Freeport Power Company, supply virtually all the Commonwealth’s electricity needs. The current Electricity Act does not promote RE use, which is a barrier to the development of renewable energy in the country. Potential renewable energy resources include waste-to-energy, solar (hot water and power generation by photovoltaic systems), wind and tidal resources. Some Achievements:
