The European Investment Bank (EIB)April 27th, 2011
The EIB, established in 1958, is the European Union’s long-term financing institution owned by its 27 member states.
Outside the European Union, EIB lending is governed by a series of mandates from the EU in support of EU development and cooperation policies in partner countries. In this context, security of energy supply and environmental sustainability are among its key objectives.
Consequently, renewable energy and energy-efficiency projects are at the heart of the EIB’s energy investment efforts in particular in the Caribbean Region where it has been operating for almost four decades.
Beyond sheer lending volumes, the EIB has developed other financing means, such as equity and carbon funds, to further support renewable energy and energy-efficiency projects. The Bank also works upstream with project promoters providing technical assistance to develop projects.
